Let the Markets Begin….

As spring gets a little closer to summer the local markets start opening up their stalls. From the large markets that take up streets and fields to the ‘pocket markets’ that bring produce around the corner .. there is something for everyone.

The first starter is the Moss Street Market which returns with half days April 17 & 24 and a full schedule May 1 (Saturday 10-2).

Wednesday Nights and Saturdays and will be the hot days for markets around the Capital Region. A few exceptions are the Metchosin (Sundays) and Sidney (Thursday Night)

If you don’t mind a bit of travel; up the Malahat Crofton and Duncan have regular markets and a short ferry ride will get you to Mayne, Saltspring and Pender Islands’ markets. For details of Markets all over the province check out the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets:

The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) represents farmers’ markets throughout the Province. To become a member, vendors must make, bake or grow the products and then sell them at the market. Farmers’ markets sell a wide range of farm-fresh, wholesome foods including fruits and vegetables, organics, specialty cheese, eggs, beef, seafood, jams, artisan products, and so much more!

In addition to the Markets, many local farms will also sell direct, for information about local producers check out Island Farm Fresh Web site.

The Southern Vancouver Island Direct Farm Marketing Association is a non-profit association of about 75 growers and producers on Southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, who sell their farm and vineyard products directly to consumers.
