Victoria Events for May 2010 Monthly Summary

Welcome to our Monthly Update this is our regular update out on the first of the month with the highlights of the upcoming month.

Special Days and Holidays

  • 1 – May Day
  • 9 – Mother’s Day
  • 24 – Victoria Day (Stat holiday)
  • 31 – Memorial Day (U.S.)

Recurring Events Starting this Month

  • Metchosin Farmers’ Market Sundays Starting May 9th
  • Harbour Ferries Water Ballet Sundays Starting May 23rd

While school isn’t over yet, summer isn’t that far off. With Victoria Day being one of the most event laden weekends in Victoria – it should get you in the mood.

The beginning of May will have a destinct Navy flavor with the Battle of the Atlantic Parade on May 2nd and the 100th anniversary (Navy Day) on May 4th. See the separate post on Navy events this summer.

For book lovers there are two sales this month that support great causes. Time Colonist Book Sale, annual literacy fundraiser will be held in the Victoria Curling Club, drop off May 1/2 and sale May 15/16. The Friends of Victoria Library hold their sale Nellie McClung Branch Saturday, May 29/20.

To finish the month, again on a nautical theme, with Swiftsure Weekend May 29/30.

Victoria Day Weekend

While the Island Farm’s Victoria Day Parade is the anchor event on Monday, the weekend will be full of events. The Luxton Rodeo and the Celtic Festival run all weekend. Fort Rodd Hill hosts a historic encampment all with period reenactments happening both Saturday and Sunday.

Navy Centennial Celebrations

The signs welcoming visitors to Victoria proudly proclaim that it is the home of the Canadian Pacific Fleet. Well this year is the 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Navy and Victoria is going to have more than its share of events. There is an outline of the events for Vancouver Island on theNavy Website.

May 2nd will see the annual in downtown Victoria. In commemoration of the longest battle of the Second World War, the Battle to secure the shipping lanes between Europe and North America.

May 4th will be Navy Day in Victoria marking the anniversary of the establishment of the Canadian Navy (May 4, 1910) with multiple events occurring around the region

  • CFB Esquimalt

CFB Esquimalt tour program starts on May 24th with daily tours starting at 11AM (Monday-Saturday) until August 21.

A number of other Memorial events will occur in May including; the installation of a memorial window at St. Paul’s Naval and Garrison Church on May 22 and a Candle Light Ceremony at God’s Acre Cemetery off Colville Road in Esquimalt on May 27.

June will see an International Fleet Review (June 9 to 14) with ship visits from navies all around the Pacific Rim and Indian Ocean. Ships of 25 navies are scheduled to participate.
