MeetupVictoria’s Kids in Victoria, Summer 2010 edition

We are well into the summer holidays for most of the school age folk and probably some will be getting a little bored by now, here is Meetup Victoria’s guide to cheap and/or free local programs for kids.

There are many great agencies providing activities for kids and families so in a somewhat geographic order here are some great resources.

Covering most of  the South Island is the Greater Victoria Public Libraries which has a complete set of info at their Kid’s and Teens page. In addition to serving most of our region, these Library programs are focused on daytime activities, great for your teen that might be at ‘loose ends’ over the summer. Programs can be limited and events may require pre-registration (mostly online) so get in early -  take all you want but use all you take! There is also a searchable event calendar where you can look at details, register for events, or subscribe to be notified about upcoming events.

Also covering the region are the Parks and Recreation facilities in Greater Victoria offer extensive programs over the summer including summer camps, fitness programs, and drop-in sessions. For low cost events check the special deals at the fitinfitness.ca site which is a great starting point to get to information from all the facilities.

There are specific guides out for each area or municipality.

The City of Victoria has its CityVibe program out for the Summer of 2010 including events at Beacon Hill and Centennial Square. In addition to the big weekend events like Symphony Splash, there are great family events like the Paint In (July 17th) and the free B-Film festival starting Friday Aug 6th and continuing Saturday nights through August.

Saanich has the Saanich Summer SunFest with events such as the Strawberry Festival on July 11 and regular events such as Music in the Park and Fun in the Park. Also in Saanich check out the Panarama Rec Centre’s Summer 2010 program guide.

Esquimalt Recreation’s has posted its Active Living Guide with summer program details. There is a number of free drop-in events at the Teen Centre (535 Fraser Street – The Green House besidethe Recreation Centre) throughout the summer and Esquimalt’s free Summer movie night will return August 28th.

Panorama Rec Centre has its own 2010 summer program out including weekly theme swims and week long camps. For those teens who might have a desire to work at the Rec Centre check out the free “How Do I Get a Job at the Pool?” sessions on July 6th and August 24th. In addition to the Rec Centre program also check out the CRD regional parks calendar of events.

For the north end of the penisula, check out the Peninsula Celebrations Society and the Sidney Summer Sounds Concert Series on Sunday’s at the end of Beacon Avenue.

In Colwood, Langford and environs, check the WestShore Park and Recreation site. There program guide can be printed if you haven’t picked one up. Highlights include the Mad Hatters Pool Party on July 24th and free activities such as beach volleyball. Also in Langford, Eagle Ridge Community Centre which will be hosting Langford Days on July 17th and 18th.

Other sources of Kid Friendly Community Events

The good folks at Kids In Victoria also provide great tips for families. They also have an events calendar that will cover more paid programs that we don’t cover here at MUV.
